Septic Social

In the past several years, LMPA Board Member Mark Richardson has become very interested in the science regarding the late-season cyanobacteria blooms we have been experiencing on our lake.  We know that excess nutrients in the lake can aggravate cyanobacteria blooms. Potential sources of nutrients include erosion and dirty runoff from shoreline properties, as well as poorly functioning septic systems.
In the interest of sharing the latest innovations on septic system function and maintenance, we are hosting (of all things) a Septic Social at our cottage Eyrie, on June 25 from 4:00 – 5:30.  Stop by for an IPA or a glass of wine (see our Septi-Tech system in use!) and ask questions of the water resource and septic system experts  on hand:
Amy Picotte, Lakeshore Manager, Vermont DEC
Graham Bradley, Phd, Hydrogeologist, Vermont DEC
Jared Willey, President, Advanced Onsite Services
Also, If you are interested in learning about other steps you can take on your shoreline to help protect Lake Morey’s water quality, check out Vermont’s Lake Wise Program website at http://dec.vermont.gov/watershed/lakes-ponds/lakeshores-lake-wise/what.

The Ill-Made Knight – Filmed locally, Written and Produced by Thea Brooks

Two summers ago our daughter, Thea Brooks, wrote and produced a short movie that was filmed around the Upper Valley, including various venues around Lake Morey. The film, The Ill-Made Knight tells the story of Ella, a 3rd grader whose family’s backyard forest is being clear cut by a logging enterprise. This compelling story tells of this young girl’s passion for her woods, her battle to save them, and her inspiration by her reading of The Once and Future King, from which the name of the film is taken.

Thea has had many acting roles, including a short film that won a prize at the Sundance Film Festival. Her next role is as Ariel in Shakespeare’s The Tempest at the Stonington Opera House in Deer Isle, Maine.

The film will be shown at the Main Street Museum on 58 Bridge St., White River Junction, June 3 from 3:30 to 4:30 with discussion. See info.wrif.org for more information including tickets.

Seminar on Blue Algae Bloom in our Lakes

The Lake Morey Commission would like to advise of an educational seminar that will take place in Fairlee on Saturday, June 17th . In the past, New England lakes and rivers have seen a blue-green algae present for a short period in the spring and fall. Blue-green algae are common and natural to our waters. As with any bacteria, there are some precautions when coming in contact with this form of bacteria. Angela Shambaugh, State of Vermont Environmental Scientist,  will cover these precautions in her presentation followed by a question & answer period at 10:00 AM on June 17th at the Fairlee Fire Station training room on Lake Morey Road. All interested residents are invited to this informative seminar.
