Best Practices

  • Keep pollutants out of the lake
  • Never rake leaves, grasses and other plant materials into the lake.
  • Consider native plants when designing your landscape.
  • Don’t use herbicides or fertilizer where they can run into the lake.
  • Stop mowing/cultivating along the shore; allow a natural buffer to develop
  • Maintain your septic system and avoid putting harmful chemicals down the drain to minimize groundwater pollution.
  • Reduce runoff by aerating lawn areas and replacing impervious surfaces, such as paved driveways, with greener alternatives.
  • Avoid making changes to your waterfront that could harm fragile wildlife habitats.
  • Be aware that boat wakes contribute to the breakdown of the shoreline and continual wave action may prevent resident loons from making a successful nest and having young.
